In the calm bay off southwest Lombok, three small islands sit close together in water that rarely gets rough and almost never gets crowded. That combination makes this half-day trip one of the friendliest introductions to snorkeling anywhere on the island.
You begin at the harbour, where you board the boat with your guide and head out across a bay so sheltered that the surface is often mirror-flat. The first stop is usually the reef off Gili Nanggu, where coral starts just metres from the beach and the water is shallow enough that you can see clearly while barely leaving the surface. Schools of small reef fish move through in bright clouds, and because so many visitors feed them over the years, they come in remarkably close.
From there the boat moves to Gili Sudak, greener and slightly larger, where the reef sits alongside a shaded beach that makes a natural place to rest between swims. The last stop is Gili Kedis, a tiny sandbar island ringed by clear shallows. It takes only a couple of minutes to walk around, and the snorkeling just offshore is gentle and full of life. Each stop has its own character, so the trip never feels repetitive.
- Boat with crew for the full trip
- Mask, snorkel and fins provided in various sizes
- Snorkeling instructor to guide you in the water
- Three separate snorkeling and beach stops
- Life jackets available for non-swimmers
Your instructor spends time with anyone who needs it, showing you how to fit and clear a mask, breathe calmly and move efficiently with fins. Nervous swimmers can wear a life jacket and simply float face-down, which still gives an excellent view of the reef below. Confident snorkelers are free to range further along the coral edges where the water deepens and visibility opens up.
This is an ideal choice for families with children, complete beginners, older travellers and anyone who finds busier snorkeling sites intimidating. The sheltered bay means flat water for most of the year, and weekday mornings in particular can feel almost private. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a towel and drinking water, and a waterproof camera if you have one, since the light in these shallows is excellent for photos.
The trip takes around five hours in total, leaving plenty of the day free afterwards. Departure times can be adjusted to suit your plans, and if you want longer at one particular island, just say so before you set out. Get in touch to reserve your date.
