Lombok’s inland highlands hold a different island altogether: cooler, greener and shaped by water. This private full-day tour follows spring water from the ornamental pools of a historic temple complex to the forested slopes where it falls through the trees in soft, shimmering curtains.
The day starts with a morning pickup and a drive inland, away from the beaches and into a landscape of rice terraces, irrigation channels and small market towns. Your first stop is a Balinese-Hindu water temple, a reminder of the long shared history between Bali and Lombok. Spring water feeds terraced pools and bathing areas, framed by carved stone gateways, old trees and gardens that stay green all year. Your guide can explain the role water plays in local ritual, and there is time to walk the grounds slowly and photograph the reflections.
From there the road climbs toward the southern flank of Mount Rinjani, where the temperature drops noticeably and the air smells of damp earth and clove. A well-shaded path leads down through smallholdings planted with coffee, cocoa and banana before arriving at Benang Kelambu. The waterfall earns its name, which refers to a curtain: instead of a single crashing column, the water seeps through thick vegetation on the cliff face and falls in dozens of fine, parallel veils into pools below.
- Private air-conditioned vehicle with driver for the whole day
- Hotel or villa pickup and drop-off
- Visit to the water temple complex with time to explore
- Guided walk down to the waterfall and back
- Flexible schedule with stops for food, coffee and photos
You can stand directly beneath the falling water, swim in the shallow pool at its base, or sit on the rocks and enjoy one of the most photogenic spots on the island. The rainforest setting keeps the area cool even in the middle of the day, and on weekday mornings it is often remarkably peaceful. Bring swimwear, a towel and shoes with reasonable grip, since the path can be slick after rain.
This itinerary is a good fit for travellers who enjoy nature and culture in equal measure, for couples, and for families with children old enough to manage a moderate walk with steps and uneven ground. It is also a welcome escape on hot days, when the highlands are far more comfortable than the coast.
Allow around eight hours in total, returning to your accommodation in the late afternoon. If you would like to add a scenic detour, a longer stop at the temple or a traditional lunch on the way back, simply mention it when booking.
